Grossology

My students are avid readers of the Grossology books by Silvia Branzei. They were absolutely thrilled to hear that The Orlando Science Center was opening a Grossology exhibit. In fact, many even threatened to hop the next plane to Florida! Together, we discussed the books, speculated about the hands-on activities, and talked about maybe being able to visit such an exhibit someday. Most of my students discussed the Tour du Nose activity. Only a few students seemed to be disgusted, to my surprise. The majority of the students became engrossed in the possibilities of hands-on Grossology activities. However, the group favorite was the Burp Machine. Many of the boys in my classroom were overcome with laughter upon hearing they would get to hear a loud burp at the end of the activity. I have a feeling many of my students will be begging their parents for trips to the Grossology Exhibit – Orlando Science Center. My students and I also discussed the appeal of hands-on activities. The class determined that hands-on activities help them to recall processes better, especially bodily processes, because they can recall their reactions through each step of the process. I only wish that the exhibit was closer to us, but perhaps someday my students will be able to experience Grossology.

If you are able to visit the Grossology exhibit at the Orlando Science Center, please be sure to share your experience with me (and enjoy)!
